Physico-chemical and antioxidant properties of new sweet cherry cultivars from Iaşi, Romania

Abstract:

Fruit samples analyzed in this paper were harvested in 2008 and 2009 from seven new sweet cherry cultivars, namely ‘Cetăţuia’, ‘Cătălina’, ‘Bucium’, ‘Golia’, ‘Maria’, ‘Ştefan’, ‘Tereza’, as well as from the cultivar ‘Boambe de Cotnari’, which is most widespread in the Iaşi area, in North-Eastern Romania. The period from flowering to full maturity was between 56–76 days. ‘Cetăţuia’ and ‘Cătălina’ were the earliest cultivars, while ‘Boambe de Cotnari’ and ‘Maria’, the latest ripening ones. Fruit width ranged between 17.0 mm and 23.0 mm and fruit weight ranged from 3.9 g and 7.4 g, but statistical differences between ‘Boambe de Cotnari’, ‘Bucium’, and ‘Maria’ were non-significant. Soluble solids content in different cultivars was between 14.5 °Brix and 17.8 °Brix. The lowest values were recorded in ‘Golia’ and ‘Ştefan’, and the highest, in ‘Boambe de Cotnari’. The lowest values of reducing sugar content were in cultivars ‘Golia’ and ‘Bucium’ (9.5 g 100 g-1 fresh fruit), while ‘Ştefan’ and ‘Cetăţuia’ had the highest reducing sugar content (12.2 g 100 g-1 fresh fruit). Titratable acidity was between 0.5 and 0.9 g malic acid 100 g-1 fresh fruit, ‘Cătălina’ and ‘Golia’ having the lowest values, while ‘Tereza’ and ‘Bucium’ had the largest. The antioxidant capacity of fruits, expressed as mg ascorbic acid 100 mL-1 fruit’s methanolic extract, ranged between 4.2 (in ‘Bucium’) and 18.6 (in ‘Ştefan’). There was a non-significant relationship between the number of days from full bloom until fruit maturation and chemical properties.

Abstract:

A cooperative blackcurrant breeding project between Sweden, Russia, Latvia and Lithuania studied yield, resistance to fungal diseases and pest, biochemical composition of berries of 20 new blackcurrant cultivars and hybrids at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture in 2004-2008. The blackcurrants were cultivated without plant protection against either diseases or pests. Yield, damage by fungal diseases and pest and biochemical composition was investigated. The hybrids BRi 9504-5, BRi 9568-1A, BRi 9508-3A and BRi 9508-3B were selected as possible cultivars.

Resistance to fungal diseases of apple cultivars and hybrids in Lithuania

Abstract:

Thirty apple (Malus domestica Mill.) cultivars and hybrids were evaluated for resistance to scab (Venturia inaequalis (Cke.) Wint.), apple blotch (Phyllosticta mali Pr.at Del.) and canker (Nectria galligena Bres.). Resistance to scab and apple blotch were studied in 2003–2005 and to canker in 2005. Injuries caused by fungal diseases were evaluated according to a 6 point scale: 0 – no disease symptoms detected on leaves or branches, 5 – injured more than 75% of leaf area or, in the case of canker, the branch is girdled by distorted area. Meteorological conditions were favourable or moderately favourable for the development of pathogens. It was ascertained that apple hybrids No 20429 and No 20016 are characterized as complex-resistant to scab, apple blotch and canker. Cultivar ‘Kurnakovskoe’ and hybrids No 19399, No 19707, No 19646, No 19942, No 20235, No 20239, No 20978 and No 24-40-52 are characterized as complex-resistant to scab and apple blotch. Cultivars ‘Delikates’, ‘Anteĭ’, hybrids No 25-50-126 and No 25-50-132 were the most sensitive to scab; ‘Pamyať Syubarovoĭ’ and No 25-51-122, to apple blotch, and ‘Katja’, ‘Yubilyar’, ‘Pamyať Syubarovoĭ’, ‘Bolotovskoe’ and No 19942, to canker.

Profitability of different technologies of strawberry cultivation

Abstract:

The experiments with strawberries were carried out in 1999–2001. There were two cultivation types in the experiment: plastic mulch and straw mulch with burning after harvesting. The present research investigated the influence of mulches and cultivars on strawberry yield and profit. Straw mulch suits for ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Bounty’ because it increases yields. In places, where late-spring frost damages are usual, the growing of early cultivars with straw mulch would be practical. Plastic mulch suits better for cultivars susceptible to grey mould (‘Senga Sengana’). It is useful to grow different cultivars because their  yields are different according to years. The yield of the plant depends on the cultivar and on the cultivation technology. In year 2000 ‘Jonsok’ grown with straw was more productive and profitable than other cultivars. In 2001 ‘Senga Sengana’ grown with straw was the most productive and more profitable than ‘Jonsok’ and ‘Bounty’. The burning of leaves flights pests and weeds and farmers can save on chemicals. Using straw mulch is more perspective for getting higher yields and profit.
